Confirmation Guidelines

Dear Confirmation Parent:

This is one of the most important years of your son’s or daughter’s religious education.  In a few months, he or she will be receiving the Holy Spirit through the Sacrament of Confirmation.  It is a special commitment made by the candidates before God, their sponsor, parents and parish family.

Below is a list of requirements that your son or daughter must complete in order to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation:

 1.      Baptismal Certificates - All Candidates for Confirmation must turn in a copy of their Baptismal Certificate before November 6, 2016.  There are NO exceptions to this deadline. Your child will not be able to receive Confirmation if his/her Baptismal Certificate is not turned in by this date.

 2.     Attendance:  Candidates must attend class every Sunday from 9:00 to 10:15 a.m.  They are not allowed more than three (3) absences.

 3.     Mass Attendance:  Beginning mid-September, there will be a sign-in notebook in the back of the church for all students to sign in weekly.  It is important that your child(ren) attend mass and this begins with you !  If you miss mass and attend another church, please bring the bulletin from that church to class the following week.   Mass attendance is a requirement.

 4.     Attend our CCD Program for one year prior to Confirmation (10th grade) as Confirmation is a two-year program.

 5.     Community Service Hours:  Each student must do at least 25 hours of Community service (12.5 hours to be completed with the Church) during this current year and 5 hours of which may have been completed during 2012-2013 CCD calendar.    This does not include mandatory attendance at certain church events to be discussed at meeting.

 6.     ConfirmationFee of $15 will be due on or before the last parent meeting to be announced upon receipt of Confirmation Date.

 7.     Mandatory Retreats: The retreat requirements have changed slightly this year.    All candidates are required to attend the following events:

Mini-retreat will be held on Sunday, January 7, 2017

8.    Marriage Status of Parents: It is mandatory that if parents of any student are separated or divorced, custody of child rotates and parents are of different religions, i.e one parent is Catholic and the other parent is of another religion that you meet with Mary Jo before September 25, 2016.

As a parent you will be required to attend all the Confirmations meeting during the coming months.   Please post the attached list of dates and plan to attend these meetings.

When selecting a sponsor remind your son or daughter of the following requirements:

 1.       Sponsor’s must be a good practicing Catholic (be able to receive Holy Communion, etc).

 2.      Sponsor must already received the Sacraments of Baptism, Penance, Holy Eucharist and Confirmation.

 3.      Sponsor may be the candidate’s Baptismal Sponsor, or a relative or someone who will give the candidate assurance.  Church law states that the sponsor must be at least sixteen (16) years of age.  The sponsor may not be the father or mother.

We are extremely fortunate to have Mrs. Patricia Johnson teach the confirmation Class.  She spends countless hours preparing lessons and working with these young adults.  Please check with her to see what you can do to help prepare your son/daughter for confirmation.  They will have weekly homework assignments – please ensure that your child completes them.

Remember, You, the Parent and Sponsor must set the example and instill in these young adults their faith and religion.  If they see you praying, participating at Mass, receiving the Sacraments regularly, being involved in parish activities and organizations, they too will be followers of Christ.

I look forward to a great C. C. D. Year and ask that the Holy Spirit guide us.   If you have any questions, or require further information, please do not hesitate to call me at (210) 834-1482.

May the Lord bless you always,

 Mary Jo Johnson
