First Communion & Reconciliation Guidelines

 Dear First Communion Parent:

This year will be one of the most important years of your child’s religious education.  Your son or daughter will be receiving two Sacraments this year, Reconciliation and First Communion.

The first half of this year we will be instructing your child about Reconciliation. In order for the children to understand the Sacrament of Reconciliation and to make this sacrament more meaningful their First Reconciliation will be on Saturday, April 1, 2017 at 9:00 am.

The second half of the year will focus on First Communion.  First communion will be held the last day of class on Sunday, April 23, 2017, at 8:00 am mass.

Below are a few guidelines and recommendations:

 1.  All students must attend Religious Education Classes two years prior to receiving the Sacrament of Holy Eucharist.

 2.  Children must attend class every Sunday from 9:00 to 10:15 a.m.  They are not allowed more than three (3) absences.

 3.  Your child should know the following Prayers:  Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be to the Father; also, Angel of God and Act of Contrition.  A list of prayers will be provided.

 4. Please check with your child’s teacher periodically to see what you need to do to help your child.  Throughout the year we will be having Parent Meetings on Sunday mornings.  Our first Parent Meeting will be held Sunday, September 25th, 9:45 a.m.,  in the Parish Hall.  It is requested that both parents attend these important meetings.  Please note the listed Meeting dates.

 5.  Mass Attendance:  Beginning mid-September, there will be a sign-in notebook in the back of the church by the missalettes  (right side) for all students to sign in weekly.  It is important that your child(ren) attend and understand the mass and this begins with you!  If you miss mass and attend another church, please bring the bulletin from that church to class the following week.   Mass attendance is a requirement.

 6.  Baptismal Certificates: All Candidates for First Communion and Confirmation must turn in a copy of their Baptismal Certificate before November 6, 2016.  There are NO exceptions to this deadline. Your child will not be able to receive Reconciliation, First Communion or Confirmation if his/her Baptismal Certificate is not turned in before November 6, 2016.

 7.  Community Service Hours.  Each student must do at least 5 hours of Community service during this current year at church.

 8.  First Communion Fee of $10 will be due on or before Saturday, April 1, 2017.

 9.  Marriage Status of Parents: It is mandatory that if parents of any student are separated or divorced, custody of child rotates and parents are of different religions (i.e.  one parent is Catholic and the other parent is of another religion) that you meet with Mary Jo before September 25, 2016.

Remember, You, the Parent must set the example and instill in these young children their faith and religion.  If they see you praying, participating at Mass, receiving the Sacraments regularly, and teaching and talking to them about Christ, they too will be followers of Jesus.

I look forward to a great C. C. D. Year and ask that the Holy Spirit guide us.   If you have any questions, or require further information, please do not hesitate to call me at (210) 834-1482.

May the Lord bless you always,
